Vintage Spring

Friday was a most fantastical day.

And yes, I do understand that it's now Monday (almost Tuesday, but who's counting) and true, I do say every now and then that I prefer to blog in real-time. But trust me. I have my reasons.

So. Friday. The dew points and the barometric pressures and the meteorological powers that be gifted us with yet another plum perfect day. If I'm not careful, I scare myself into thinking that it's much later in the year than it actually is. Twice this week I've feared that I missed my sister-in-law's birthday (it's in May).

I worked up a sweat on one of our three walks and I freaked out because I need it to stay right here, you know? There looms the possibility that at this pace, we'll be seeing 140 degrees by June.

I know that any and all Joes, regular or otherwise, can appreciate the precious gift of a Summertime day smack-dab at the end of Winter, but little people help. They just do.

They skip to school and twirl around in their "longish" skirt.

They have artistic license in determining what matches.

They say things like, "Bemember when it used to be summertime and we saw that horse do that one thing?"

They use "besides" as a universal transition word.

Mommy: Careful, don't bonk your head!
They: Besides, one time I had a lady bug in my hair!

They stroll around like any smart three and a half year old would do and they refuse to wear shorts. They opt for fleece pants. In fact, they appear to have developed a crippling fear of shorts over the past six months, but that's not something I care to delve into right at the moment.

Before long, we'll be moving on down the road and we're having more moments of wistfulness over leaving. But we've got the Summer, baby.

Come to think of it, we've also got the Spring.

And even the tail-end of Winter.

(See what I mean? Confusing.)

So with my three small charges, I plan to live it up and if Living It Up means we plunk quarters into the pop machines by the now-defunct Dollar General (R.I.P.) five out of seven days, well, so be it. Some happiness can be bought.

Subsequent to all of Friday's general awesomeness, I was bitten by a rogue, rebel-force bug and spent most of the next three days pining with an inexplicable fierceness for a light-blocking sleep mask. You think I'm joking? It was all I could think about. And really, it was all I could think about because my brain wasn't working at its optimal bandwidth. I got out of bed only for the necessities and considered stopping off for a siesta on the way to the necessity-room which is roughly four feet from my bedroom door.

Today, I am faced with the hope that I may yet live to see my 36th year, despite the facts that 1) I have the sinking suspicion that there is a small, rotting carcass stuck in my stomach and 2) everything I eat tastes like rotten mint chip ice cream.

Hey, you asked.

I haven't opened my laptop since Friday. I couldn't summon the energy to read a book until this afternoon, and even then, it was touch-and-go. So fill me in. What kind of excitement and tomfoolery did I miss? Got any good celeb gossip for me? Please tell me Tim and Faith are still together. And Kelli and Mark. Did you eat anything especially delicious over the weekend? See any good flicks?

Dear flu shot,

Fine. You win.
See ya on the flip-side.

Love,
FPFG

  1. Oh Ruby girl, you are a delight! Shoes like that make the world go 'round.

If Tim and Faith ever broke up, I would assume the fetal position for days and might just finally dump out my glass with it's half full mentality. Except I won't.

Sorry you were sick, lady. Get all better soon!

  6. Ruby's sneakers alone made me smile{love um} thanks for sharing pieces of your life!

  7. Besides, (couldn't resist) this just means you're making more room for crack bark a few days down the road when it doesn't taste like mint chocolate chip. That's kinda my new way of looking at flu bugs.

  8. What a little ham that Ruby girl is! Love her sneakers and her crazy curly hair!

  9. Oh boy...I HAD THAT TOO!
    Vicious and terrible.
Hmmm updates. It is still snowing up in here...Canada. SO I watched "Young Adult" this weekend. I decided I liked it because I am pretty sure that is EXACTLY what I would've grown up to be if not for Jesus.
    Get well soon!

  10. *summons up best Chandler Bing voice* Could Ruby BE any cuter?

I ate way too much food this weekend...and that is almost always a good thing. Mostly. There was much frivolity and hilarity happening in the great white north. We reminisced the good old days and tried a family recipe that hasn't been made in about 30 years. I'll be having it again, but not before there are littles of our own about. This is kid-food all the way... http://myfrontstoop.blogspot.ca/2012/03/old-family-recipe.html

  11. Ohhh, you just made my day, er, night, I guess it's tomorrow! Feel better! We have snow/rain/hail here this first day of Spring!

    Happy first day of Spring!

  12. Stomach bugs are of the devil.

Things not of the devil: The movie 'The Way'. Have you seen it? Wow. Just, wow. I watched it while ironing, which I don't really recommend as I almost burned myself b/c I couldn't see through the tears. Also, 'Crazy Stupid Love'. Oh my goodness. I wanted to watch it again almost immediately. And that never happens.

    Feel better:)

  13. so sorry you were sick, girlie. hope you are feeling fully yourself by this morning. :)

i've thought the same thing about this weather.....hoping it's not 140* by June!!!

  14. I've been wondering where you were. Now I know. Poor thing. Hope the energy you lost over the last few days rebounds and you feel more than better.

  15. Feel better FPFG! As my friend said to me, "the earth must have a fever". It just can't get 80ish in March, a treat yes, but not a good sign.

  16. 1. I love the wink picture!
    2. Feel better! Being sick in "summer" is especially crummy.
    3. The end.

  17. That fear of shorts has happened here before. And where we live we'll have a summer day in the middle of winter sometimes. If you don't like the weather today it will change by tomorrow. ;) I can't help you on the celebrity thing. ;)

  19. Ruby is beautiful!

I was just talking about the same thing...it was 87 degrees here in Ohio yesterday and supposed to be warmer today...I can't imagine how hot this summer is going to be. Bring it on...as long as it doesn't get cold again.

  21. Dearest FPFG,
Oh, how I have missed you and my sweet Ruby, you are a girl after my own fashionista heart! Love the outfit sister and you wear it well :-) I must say that I have soaked up every.last.bit. of the sunshine this past weekend and was so happy my stomach almost exploded, not like yours, but in a good way! I have given up my need for US weekly magazine, so I am not sure who is together and who is apart....but I will always cheer for Tim and Faith. I had a fabulous pineapple martini...I know, some would frown on that, but I turned that frown upside down and it was like drinking pure sunshine on a beach! I liked it. See you on the flipside sista!

  24. I ate the best pizza I've ever enjoyed on Saturday while we were in Chicago. It was called a California CLub...had a bit of chicken, some bacon, tomato, cheese, avacado, lettuce tossed in a mayo dressing....it sounds ODD, but it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good.

  25. FYI, The flu shot is a good thing but a stomach virus is not the flu. The vaccine will not protect you from from it.

    1. Oh, silly anonymous, I KNEW someone would call me out on this. And of course it would be you! I did not have a stomach virus. I had the wretched high fever, chills, dastardly body aches, phlegmy cough, pitch-fork through my eye socket headache. My trips to the necessity room were just for pee.

  26. I am having trouble committing to just one comment.

I can not help but crack my business up over your (RIP).

    Siley. Well. I've got nothing.

Rubes. Be still my cute hair heart.

I'm still married. Since you asked.

  29. Recently, I realized that my kids had never plunked quarters into a soda machine and heard the magic ka-plunk of their cold can of soda coming down the chute. Whoa! We had to correct the negligance quickly!

  30. Oh how I adore Ruby. That hair, those plaid sneakers! Feel better soon and yes, hubby and I are still together. What, aren't we celebs?

  31. It's also oddly warm here in MN. So much so, that I forced Brad into heading to Lowes to see if we could find any flowers to buy. Guess what? They had NONE as it's mid March and I was thinking it was May.

I got "schooled". So now I enjoy my still-dormant plants and containers filled with dirt. I did place some dollar store "eggs on sticks" in said containers to pretty it up a bit.

Sorry you were taken down by a bug! NO! Have you ever referred to the biffy as the necessary place prior to this? No good. I wonder what you do if you get that sick and it's a weekday? Who helps? The whole idea is scary to me!

I recommend acidophilus capsules to replace friendly bacteria in your tummy. ***YOU shared!**** ;-)

Love Ruby's shoes and Silas' attachment to fleece. I guess you'll just see how that works for him when it's 90 degrees?

Hope you're better & I love that you refer to your smalls as "charges". Soo cute!

  32. Breaking news: I'm also still married, Tia Carrere is no longer on Celeb Apprentice and Lou Ferrigno is STILL giving 110%!

  33. Well! Jessica Simpson is STILL preggo and continues to walk around on dangerously tall high heels but having never been preggo, I'm not one to judge. The Hunger Games comes out this Friday and if you havent read them, they are a must. Truely. Looks like are country friends Tim and Faith are doing well and so are Blake and Miranda so all is well on the home front.
It rained here in Cali this weekend and has been cold ever since so please say hello to the sunshine for me! Enjoy every minute of smiles and sillies with your littles-they are too fantastic for words!

  34. Since I can honestly say that I know Faith (and Tim) personally, I can tell you that they are still married and still happy. ;)

Your stories keep this Mississippi girl smiling.

Love from a FPFG fan in Star, MS

  35. Love these pix. Seriously girl, you slay me OFTEN with the pix of your littles.

I'm sorry you were sick. I thought I would never be well enough to Pepsi-indulge again back in December/January. You heard me. It covered portions of two months. But I'm hunky-dory now, so take heart :)

Now, onto current events. As confirmed by Anonymous (how exciting to meet an anonymous who knows Tim and Faith! I feel like a friend-in-law once removed now, or something) it seems Tim & Faith are fine. I did hear that Clooney was arrested for some kind of political protest-y type situation. With his dad, no less. I'm sketchy on the details but I think it was regarding the Sudan. His mom was on hand and proud. I know this to be true because I saw it on Extra. They know things.

All jokes aside I'm praying that you feel all better soon.

  36. I had almost forgotten, but my oldest had a terrible time transitioning from short to long (sleeves, pants, what have you). He actually said they hurt. But he's 7 now and his last transition was effortless. There is hope!

LOVE Ruby's wink and where you placed it, so funny!

The only news I know of is that Max & Ruby's parents are still MIA, Dora's getting a new voice, and Angry Birds has a world premiere short film conflicting with Royal Rangers tomorrow night (but it's a world premiiiiieeeere, Mommy!!!)

    I hope you're feeling better!

  37. I am so SO SO afraid all this early warmth and azaleas blooming two months early means it's going to be 180 degrees by July. It's going to be a miserable long hot month. I will become a nudist and stay in the cold shower all day long if that becomes the case. I will.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Everyone is all "isn't this weather just wonderful?!" and I'm like -- "yeah, what's this mean for the summer???" Not to be negative...just a tad fearful that *this* can't be frozen in time.

    Be well. Soon!

  39. There looms the possibility that at this pace, we'll be seeing 140 degrees by June. ~ ohmygoodness that is scary true! my daffodils are in full bloom & after last nights rain the grass is so green & long, we'll be mowing soon. sorry about the dead thing in your stomach. if Hannah was near she'd ask me to take a picture for sure. she's obsessed with dead. (or i take too many pictures? could be.) this morning she hounded me to please take a picture of the dead raccoon the dog hauled into the back yard.
I agree with Abby....partly. I read your blog at night & feel like I'm peaking in through the crack in the door at a really cool slumber party. Apparently the newness of blogging has worn off just enough that typing from a 1x4 (phone) has lost it's glam, which is probably not a bad thing. 'cause look what happens when i get set loose on a 'real deal' computer. hA! Here's hoping for mintless mexican! :)

  40. I smiled all the way through your post, up until "dead carcass" and then I laughed out loud.

I have big plans to dive into Spring and tackle a little yard spruce up. Is it too early to wear sandals? Cause really they don't typically come out of the closet for few more weeks. Shall I be a rebel?

  45. Such a cutie that Ruby is! Someone already mentioned George Clooney getting arrested and it was for a good cause but I also read that when asked his name he said Brad Pitt. Ha - such a sense of humor that guy! And Mark co-hosted with Kelly last week so I think they are good. Never a question in my mind that Tim and Faith are good - very good. And about eating anything good - my daughter and I had McDonald's french fries today. They were hot out of the frier and salted to perfection. Good? No, bad, so very bad...! Hope you are feeling well soon and able to enjoy your unseasonably good weather a bit more. Here we have been hovering in the upper 30's...

      True story.
